What Have We Become? is a song by American singer and songwriter Zarah, also known as Zarah Maillard. The song was written and co-produced by Zarah and was the first single from her debut studio album Blind Woman collection, which was released on September 29, 2023, and has received critical acclaim, being called as an "exhilarating single".[1]

Background[edit]

What Have We Become? is an anthem rock song that was written to bring positive changes through self-reflection from one's perspective of a rather incongruous viewing of the world or life.[1] It was inspired by the rock musician Bono of U2 whose songs often reference humanity as one of the band's themes and their approach to songwriting, which became the fastest track written in the album, according to Zarah.[2]

The debut single is part of the Blind Woman album collection and was recorded at the Henson Recording Studios, one of the top historical recording facilities that used to be the A&M Studios and the Charlie Chaplin Studios located in Hollywood, California, and remastered at the McCartney Studios in Los Angeles.

Zarah initially wrote What Have We Become? with an alternative concept in mind, and also arranged, and co-produced the single including the entire album.[3] Among the known musicians and session players who played in the album included Chris Chaney, the bassist of Jane's Addiction and Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill album tour.[4]

Critical reception[edit]

In 2023, upon its release, What Have We Become? single debuted in the United States and Europe, receiving worldwide acclaim.[4] Music critics cited What Have We Become? as an "exhilarating single"[1] and an "introspective song that inspires listeners to make positive changes"[5] that "channels her raw and pure message through this dynamic musical creation".[1] Additional critics have highlighted the "emotive flair [...] prevalent in every line of Zarah’s punchy lyrics".[6]
