Mass Appeal India is an Indian subsidiary hip hop record label operated by Mass Appeal Records, an American independent record label founded in 2014 by Nas.[1][2]. They are partnered with the The Orchard for global distribution [3]

History[edit]

Mass Appeal India began it's operations on 20 August 2019, as multi-partnership within Universal Music India [4]. It is the first global subsidiary by Mass Appeal Records.[5][6]

The label initially signed the artist DIVINE as its inaugural signee [7]. On October 9, 2019, the label released its first track, "Kohinoor," by DIVINE. Later, he released three studio albums, "Kohinoor", "Punya Paap", "Gunehgar" with Mass Appeal India.[8]

In 2020, They signed the rapper Raja Kumari. Later, she left Mass Appeal India and launched her own label called "Godmother Records" [9].

In 2022, they terminated their distribution relationship with Universal Music India and partnered again with Sony's The Orchard for it's global distribution [10][11].

In 2023, Mass Appeal India initiated a scouting program in the South Indian market to sign Malayalam hip-hop artists, following the growth in the Malayalam music Industry.[12] The label's first signee under this initiative was the hip-hop artist Dabzee. Subsequently, they signed other artists in Malayalam hip-hop, including ThirumaLi, BABY JEAN, Vedan, among others [13].

Later in 2023, Mass Appeal India, in collaboration with Gully Gang, released "Obsessed" by Abhijay Sharma and Riar Saab, which reached No.1 on Spotify's Global Viral Charts for several weeks. [14][15]. The same year, AP Dhillon’s track ‘With You’, released by Mass Appeal India, reached 38th position on Spotify Global 200 chart [16].

In November 2023, KSHMR reconnected with his Indian roots to release the desi hip hop album "KARAM" through Mass Appeal India.[17] The album included collaborations from artists such as Raftaar, KRSNA, Ikka, Seedhe Maut, Raja Kumari, The PropheC, Dabzee, and Talha Anjum.[18] "KARAM" topped the hip hop charts on Apple Music in India.[19]

Earlier in 2024, DIVINE & Karan Aujla released a collaborative album titled "STREET DREAMS" through Mass Appeal India, featuring producers like Boi-1da, Allen Ritter, WondaGurl, Harry Fraud, Leven Kali, and Trox [20]. The album ranked 22nd position in Canadian Albums Chart and 27th in Official New Zealand Music Chart [21][22].

In May, 2024, they partnered with The Ranjha to record and release a new studio version of his social media viral freestyle 'Muqabala' under Mass Appeal India. [23].

Controversy[edit]

In 2024, Mass Appeal India released a track titled "MANKA" by Dabzee. During the marketing and music video announcement for this release, rapper and songwriter M.H.R alleged that the beats of "MANKA" were plagiarized and used without his consent. M.H.R asserted that his own track "Ottakam" and "MANKA" were strikingly similar, claiming that "MANKA" had been recreated in collaboration with producer Thudwiser. Initially, "Ottakam" was removed from Spotify due to a copyright issue. However, Spotify subsequently resolved the matter and reinstated "Ottakam," while "MANKA" was taken down from the platform. Eventually, the parties involved reached an agreement, and both tracks were restored on the platform [24][25].
