"Nasty" is a song by American singer and songwriter Tinashe. It was released on April 12, 2024, via her independent record label, Tinashe Music Inc. & Nice Life Recording Company. The song's release coincided with her performance at the 2024 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival.[1] The song serves as the lead single of her upcoming seventh studio album Quantum Baby. It was written by Tinashe, and Ricky Reed and produced by Zack Sekoff alongside Reed. The song is an uptempo R&B club track that contains elements of electro and trap.

Background[edit]

Tinashe initially teased the song on a livestream via her Instagram on Valentine's Day 2024. On April 3, Tinashe signed a worldwide publishing deal with Position Music, obtaining the publishing rights to her future releases from that point forward and her previous album BB/Ang3l.[2]

She officially teased her forthcoming seventh studio album, "BB/Ang3l Pt.2 - Quantum Baby", with a trailer shared on her various social media platforms on April 8, where "BB/Ang3l Pt. 2 - Quantum Baby" was officially confirmed by her to serve as the second installment of a trilogy of albums. The following day she officially announced the single set to drop that Friday. In an interview with Forbes, "Nasty" was dubbed as "perfect pre-summer song". She stated “I really wanted to have that energy going into the season, just feeling like I want to have fun, be outside, get sweaty, get nasty, party energy all year... I think it's kind of all been leading up to this, and I haven't had a release in the summer in a while. So I'm really excited to be rolling it out in this way.”[3]

Commercial performance[edit]

"Nasty" first debuted on the Billboard's R&B Digital Songs Sales Chart at number 6 becoming Tinashe's third entry on the chart as an independent artist and 18th entry overall. The song has since peaked at number 4 becoming her 12th top 10 on the chart.

On the week of June 8, 2024, “Nasty” debuted at number 15 on Billboard’s Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart, becoming her ninth overall entry on the chart. The song garnered over 5.5 million streams on Spotify alone in that tracking week. It is her first entry as an independent artist and first entry in six years since her 2018 single, No Drama.

The song also entered the Billboard Hot R&B Songs at number 10 on the week dated June 1, 2024. The week later it peaked at number six on the chart becoming her fourth song to enter the top 10 on the chart.

Music video[edit]

The accompanying music video was released the same day as the single, on April 12, 2024. It was directed Jonah Haber and choreographed by Jojo Gomez.[4] The video shows Tinashe in a desert being chased by several drones. At the end of the video, she retrieves a weapon from a car and shoots a drone down before driving away.

Live performance[edit]

Tinashe performed the song live for the first time at the 2024 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 12 and 19.[5] Tinashe also performed the song on her BB/Angel tour.
