Team Outer Banks

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Team Outer Banks is the first team from North Carolina to complete the Worrell 1000 sailboat race from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, to Virginia Beach, Virginia.[1]

History[edit]

1999 - The team was skippered by John McLaughlin, from Baltimore, Maryland, and crewed by Robert 'P-Nut' Johnson of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. Of the 15 teams to compete in 1999, they finished seventh. During the event, Johnson sustained an injury to his right hand. He was replaced by ground crew member Charles Thuman, who climbed aboard at the Myrtle Beach stop and completed the remainder of the race.

2000 - The team was skippered by John McLaughlin and crewed by Robert 'P-Nut' Johnson. In 2000, twenty three teams competed. 15 completed all twelve legs, from Lauderdale to Virginia Beach. Team Outer Banks was the eleventh to finish.

2001 - The team was skippered by John McLaughlin and crewed by Charles Thuman. At the start of the Jensen Beach leg to Cocoa Beach, Team Outer Banks was one of only five boats to negotiate the surfline and sail to the next checkpoint. All of the other teams were forced to break their boats down and wait to join again later on. McLaughlin and Thuman completed the entire course, and finished eighth overall. The boats that did not sail the Jenson–Cocoa leg were penalized two hours.

2002 - The team was skippered by John McLaughlin and crewed by Rick Parsley. They completed the entire course.

2003 - The Worrell was canceled in 2003 due to inadequate funding. 36 teams were scheduled to compete before the event was canceled. Team Outer Banks did not enter the event to avoid paying the $5,000 entry fee.[2]

2022 - After a 20-year hiatus, Team Outer Banks was the first to register for the 2022 event. Skippered by Hardy Peters with crew James Eaton, both from Southern Shores, NC, Team Outer Banks completed the entire course, with the exception of the 'Trailer Leg' from Cocoa Beach to Daytona. They finished twelfth of thirteen.

2024 - In the 50th Year Anniversary Worrell 1000, Team Outer banks was skippered by Hardy Peters with crew James Eaton. They completed the entire course and finished eleventh of twelve. For their performance during the event, they were presented with the Sandra Tartaglino Memorial Sportsmanship Award.
